Together with COX Architecture, local architecture partner Cumulus Studio and the engineering team from AECOM, schlaich bergermann partner has released the designs for the Mac Point Multipurpose Stadium in Hobart, Tasmania.
The stadium is set to mark a new era for the site but also draw on the rich history of the location! It will be Tasmania’s first multipurpose arena and will host not only AFL matches and other sports, including cricket, but also arts and cultural events. Therefore, the design is a stadium that can be easily adapted to different circumstances and offers many opportunities to create a new place of public interest for the city.
The timber and steel frame structure of the transparent ETFE fixed roof creates a special atmosphere and makes the visit unique. Inspired by the structure of the former Hobart Rail Yard roundhouse, the building’s low-profile design and woven facade are typical examples of Tasmanian timber technology and also reference the local cultural practice of weaving.
