A new footbridge for the castle of Sully-sur-Loire

Construction work around the castle in the French town of Sully-sur-Loire reached an important milestone this week: the new replacement footbridge, designed by sbp in collaboration with Explorations Architecture, was lifted into place.

It replaces the former footbridge over the moat, which had been closed since 2020 due to its disrepair and unsafe condition and was dismantled earlier this year.

The new two-span footbridge is designed as minimal steel box girder and  is fitted with a wrought-iron railing. It resembles the shape and color of the original construction.

The 60-ton structure was lifted into place in one piece, which allowed for quick and easy assembly on site. Divers in the river secured the support to the ground.

The project integrates modern architecture into a historic site and illustrates the harmony that can be achieved when projects are executed thoughtfully and precisely. Final work is underway and access to the 14th century castle museum from the city center should be restored shortly.

We look forward to the completion and opening of this special bridge!
