Competition win for two footbridges in Norway

As part of the limited architectural competition for several pedestrian bridges in Oslo Lilleakerbyen, sbp together with Studio Other Spaces submitted concepts for a total of three bridges and prevailed with two bridges against the other interdisciplinary teams. The winners were the Møllefossen Bridge and the viewing platform.

The aim of the competition was to make the area more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists and to better connect the two sides of the river. In addition, the bridges should provide visitors with a unique experience along the river, focusing on a harmonious interaction between human and nature. The projects designed as part of the competition will be realized one after the other, with the Møllefossen Bridge scheduled for completion in 2030. It was designed with articulated timber trusses, two steel girders that pass under the roadway and a glass roof structure that protects visitors and building materials alike from the elements. By using an existing central pier in the river, it was possible to reduce the span width and thus save material. In addition, a fish bridge was integrated under the footbridge to allow fish to make their way upstream and to take the needs of the ecosystem into account.

We look forward to further collaboration and the realization of the Møllefossen Bridge!
